What is Oncology Massage?

by | Nov 14, 2022

2021 was an interesting year to say the least.  After a rocky start in 2020 (thanks COVID) and more looming lockdowns I was researching courses to continue my learning and find a niche. Someone I had previously met mentioned Oncology Massage.  When researching this I found there weren’t many Massage Therapists practicing in this area locally, so I figured why not!  In the beginning I was slightly overwhelmed, but in all honesty, I’m so glad I chose to do it!

So what is Oncology massage?

Oncology massage is the use of soft, gradual pressure that combines a variety of massage therapy techniques to meet the needs and comfort of the patient.  The pressure used in oncology massage is lighter than remedial massage and the duration of the massage can be adjusted according to the energy levels of the patient eg. these sessions are sometimes shorter than a regular remedial massage.

There is strong evidence supporting the use of massage therapy in the care of cancer patients.  Obviously, Oncology Massage is not a cure for cancer, but studies indicate that it does help oncology patients cope with their treatments, both physically and emotionally.  The positive effects of massage for these patients include reducing levels of pain, nausea, fatigue and anxiety.

People who have a cancer diagnosis can receive a massage from a qualified Oncology Massage Therapist.  Having completed both the Level 1 and Level 2 oncology massage courses this year, I feel privileged to offer this service at Personal Best Physiotherapy and to offer support to patients, friends and families through their journey.
